Interchangeable Virtual Instruments (IVI)

The IVI Foundation

The IVI Foundation is an open consortium founded to promote specifications for programming test instruments that simplify interchangeability, provide better performance, and reduce the cost of test program development and maintenance. TYX Corporation is a member of the IVI Foundation and an active participant in the development of IVI specifications.

TYX Products

TYX products support integration of IVI Drivers:

bullet

PAWS enables the use of IVI-C and IVI-COM drivers within its CEM drivers.

bullet

TestBase interfaces with various programming languages and test environments that support the use of IVI Drivers.

In addition, TYX products offer more advanced instrument independence capabilities:

bullet

PAWS allows the replacement of instruments with minimal changes to the Test Program Set (TPS). This capability is enabled by a software architecture where "signal drivers" encapsulate instrument-specific code and is supported by powerful resource allocation and switch path calculation algorithms implemented in the ATLAS compilers.

bullet

TestBase can be used to capture instrument-independent test requirements on a higher level of the Automatic Test System (ATS) software architecture. This ensures the preservation of requirements when instruments must be replaced.

bullet

TRD System supports the specification of test requirements in an instrument-independent fashion. It can be used to automatically generate TPS documentation, as well as instrument-independent TPS code.

TYX R&D

TYX has provided to the IVI Foundation the signal driver technology implemented by PAWS and is currently leading the development of a specification for IVI Signal Drivers. The IVI Signal Drivers build on the IVI-MSS architecture to provide the following additional interchangeability benefits, above those offered by IVI Drivers:

bullet

Replacement with instruments from a different class, or instruments that do not belong to a class (for example, synthetic instruments), or a different combination of instruments, up to full TPS re-hosting.

bullet

Guaranteed stimulus and measurement performance, in terms of range, resolution, and precision.

bullet

Interchangeability with respect to state after Reset and the evolution of state.

bullet

Self-descriptive, in terms of stimulus and measurement capabilities.

The use of IVI Signal Drivers will reduce TPS integration costs by enabling driver reuse from ATLAS and non-ATLAS TPSs.
